Can You Handle the Truth?

Can you handle the truth? – Connolly Theatre Tackles “A Few Good Men”

FALL RIVER, MA:  First a career-making stage play for writer Aaron Sorkin, then a beloved blockbuster movie starring Jack Nicholson, A FEW GOOD MEN now makes its way back to the stage at Bishop Connolly High School, December 11-13.

Alec Moniz leads the talented cast as Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a hot-shot young JAG lawyer defending two marines in a Guantanamo Bay murder case.  Inexperienced and cocky, Kaffee is kept in check by co-council Commander Joanne Galloway (Ariel Moniz), who will stop at nothing to get to the truth, and long-time friend Sam Weinberg (Bryan Janick).  The story heats up as evidence points to a conspiracy involving the menacing Colonel Nathan Jessep (Christian Babic) and a dangerous GITMO ritual called a Code Red.  “It’s the ultimate courtroom drama,” says director Chris J. Silva, “and Sorkin’s writing is nothing less than genius.”  The award-winning Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote the movie screenplay, is the creator of NBC’s hit THE WEST WING and 2007’s CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR.  “Sorkin’s script is as riveting and relevant today as it was fifteen years ago,” remarks Silva, “maybe more.”  Also featured in the cast is Jessica Valton, as prosecutor Captain Jane Ross, and Ryan Cunningham as the tortured Lt. Colonel Matthew Markinson.

The production runs December 11th and 12th at 8:00 PM and December 13th at 4:00 PM at Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River.  Tickets, $12 for adults and $10 for students, are available at the door or may be reserved by calling 508-675-4228.

Volleyball Tournament

The Lady Cougar Volleyball team defeated Blue Hills in Quarter-Finals in the MIAA South Division 3 Tournament. The Cougars won the match 3-1 by scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20.

The Cougars, who early in the match lost junior standout Erin Sullivan to a knee injury, later diagnosed as a torn ACL, rallied to defeat the Warriors. The Cougars were led by middle-hitters Jen Rego and Rebekah Cournoyer, Casey Levesque and Shaundry Swainamer (who replaced Sullivan).

With the loss of Sullivan, the Cougars will now have to continue playing as a team as they go in to face their top-seeded league foes, the Saints of Sacred Heart. The match will be played on Thursday, November 12, at 7pm at the Sacred Heart fieldhouse.

UPDATE:

The Lady Cougar volleyball season ended last night with a loss in the Semi-Finals to Sacred Heart. The Cougars, who came into this game with a lot of motivation, played their hearts out before falling to the powerful Saints.

This was a really emotional game for Connolly, who was playing the game with injured star Erin Sullivan in mind. The Cougars held their own, but it wasn’t enough. They have nothing to be ashamed of. They had one of the best seasons in Connolly history and finished top 4 for division 3 for the whole Southern part of the state.

Connolly loses 4 seniors from the team: Jen Rego, Shantel DaSilva, Nicole Rebelo, and Julia Stachura. Great job this year, Cougs! Next year is yours!

Volleyball Tournament Begins

With the South Division 3 brackets announced last Wednesday, the Bishop Connolly Girls Volleyball team has now set its goals on bringing home a Division 3 state title. They begin their quest this Tuesday night when they play the number 5 seeded Blue Hills Regional Technical High School in Quarter Final play, here at Bishop Connolly’s Lafrance Gym.

Both teams received a BYE in the First Round and it sets up to be a great game. The Cougars, who are seeded number 4 in the bracket, are coming off one of their most successful seasons in years. At 13-5, the Cougars are determined to protect home court and defeat the Warriors. Led by the great play of team captains Jen Rego, Casey Levesque, and Erin Sullivan, the Cougars will come out and play every point like it’s their last!

Be here on Tuesday, November 10th when the Warriors and Cougars set to do battle, game scheduled for a 7pm start time! Good Luck Lady Cougars!

Girls Soccer heads to State Tournament

After being forced to move up to play Division 2 in the MIAA Tournament, the Lady Cougars Soccer team now must step up its game, and show these teams that they can play with the best of them. The Cougars, who are seeded 10th in Division 2, will play the 7th seeded Green Dragons of Duxbury High School. The Cougars will show up and play this game the best they can. They will show Duxbury that their 12-4-2 record isn’t a fluke. They will go to Duxbury with the feeling of an upset happening. The Cougars are led by Captains Casey Brown and Courtney Camara, and it’s their job to make sure that the team is ready to play on Sunday.

Good Luck to the Lady Cougars. Beat Duxbury!

The game is scheduled for Sunday, November 8th, with a start time scheduled for 1pm. Good Luck!

Check back in next week, when we find out if the Cougars won!

UPDATE:

The Bishop Connolly Girls Soccer team season came to a close on Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to Duxbury High School. The Cougars, who were overmatched by the Green Dragons, held their own, playing them close but eventually losing in the end. This was the final game for Connolly seniors, Meaghan Cantwell, Alishya Anselmo, Caroline Quinn, Courtney Camara, Alyssa Oliveira, and Casey Brown. It was a tough loss for the Cougars who close the season with a 12-5 record. The team will need to re-group for next year with the loss of a lot of seniors. They will be back next year!

Congratulations on a great season, girls!

Cougs Close Season in Style

The Bishop Connolly Girls Volleyball teams closed out their regular season last Friday night at Westport. The Junior Varsity team defeated the Wildcats 2-0. This was their last game of the season. The Varsity team defeated the Wildcats by a score of 3-0.

Check back and see when and where they are playing! Good luck Lady Cougars!

Girls Volleyball

Girls junior varsity volleyball won their last home game against Tri County yesterday.

Yesterday was also Senior Night, the last night for the Varsity senior girls on volleyball. The senior girls are: Shantel DaSilva, Nicole Rebelo, Julia Stachura, and team manager, Mallie O’Brien. It was a great and exciting game, and it ended with the Connolly girls winning once again.

Girls Soccer

The girls’ varsity soccer team rebounded from a 1-0 loss vs. Diman last Saturday to tie Sacred Heart yesterday afternoon. This is the first time that the Lady Cougars have tied Sacred Heart after being defeated each time in the previous four years.

With this tie the Cougars’ record is now 10-4-2 on the season. The Lady Cougars will play Nantucket on Thursday and finish off the regular season vs. Chatham on November 2nd at Cougar Stadium.

Spirit Week Summary

Spirit week has come and gone and this was the most successful one in a while. The seniors ended up winning the “Spirit Bowl” while the defending champions, the juniors were the runners up.

This year the seniors were motivated to win the “Spirit Bowl” after a disappointing last place finish a year ago. With a reason to win, the seniors came out, dressed up in all different kinds of clothes, and defeated the competition.

The seniors’ overall score was 430 points from the week, while the second place juniors had 350.

This was a good week for the school, we all saw the unique, odd, and sometimes weird outfits, but that’s what spirit week is all about. The seniors are going to leave in 2010 with the title, “Spirit Bowl Champions”.

Small enough to know you, large enough to serve you.

This year’s Open House, held on Sunday, 10/18,  received one of the best turnouts in recent history. The school opened its doors to 250 people representing over 100 families of prospective students, compared to last year’s already impressive turnout of about 80 families. Positive feedback has come in from all angles – praise of students, faculty, tours, and the size and amenities of the school. Many visitors signed up for the Spend-A-Day program at BCHS and will be shadowing current students in the weeks to come. This Open House gives us high hopes for a large class of 2014.
